Grants

About Grants
A grant is gift aid based on need, usually offered with work-study authorization or a loan that meets the student's needs. To apply for a federal Pell Grant, Supplemental Grant (SEOG) or Washington State Need Grant (for Washington residents only) you must submit the FAFSA. Indicate whether you prefer a work-study job or are interested in a subsidized student loan. If you qualify, your financial aid award will include work-study or subsidized loan authorization.

To receive need-based aid, you need to supply proof of income, such as a federal tax return.

About Opportunity Grants
The Opportunity Grant Program is currently running at full capacity and is not accepting applications at this time. Please check back in January 2011.

The Opportunity Grant Program offers a combination of financial assistance and individualized support services. Grants are available for students in Fields of Study leading to high-demand career pathways.

Eligibility
To be eligible for an Opportunity Grant, students must:

  1. Be a Washington resident
  2. Have a family income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines for household size.
  3. Complete the FAFSA to establish financial need, however; receiving financial aid is not required.
  4. Be in an academic program approved for Opportunity Grant funding in a Field of Study leading to a high-demand career pathway. See: complete list of high-demand career pathways.

Students participating in I-BEST may automatically qualify for the Opportunity Grant Program.

Awards
Awards may include tuition and fees, books, required supplies and tools plus extra support to help students succeed. Awardees must meet weekly contact and daily attendance requirements. Students who do not qualify for traditional financial aid (no selective service, no ability to benefit, cancelled/terminated financial aid, and default) may qualify for the Opportunity Grant.
