Medical Assisting Program Prerequisite Support Courses

The following courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher to be considered for admission to the Fall Quarter Medical Assisting Cohort:

  1. AH 104: Health Care Foundations (formerly AH 101/102), 2 credits, prerequisite: ENGL 099
 (or placement into ENGL& 101) or concurrent enrollment in I-BEST academic support
  2. AH 114: Health Care Communication Skills (formerly AH 131/132), 2 credits, prerequisite: 
 ENGL 099 (or placement into ENGL& 101) or concurrent enrollment in I-BEST academic
 support
  3. CS 110: Microcomputer Applications, 3 credits. If you cannot type without looking at the
 keyboard, take BTEC 100 as a prerequisite for CS 110. (BTEC 101 or BTEC 145 can substitute
 for CS 110.) This is a prerequisite up to Fall 2017 cohort; after that it is still a program requirement, but not a prerequisite.
  4. MEDA 120: Survey of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 5 credits. This will be a prerequisite after the Fall 2017 cohort.
    1. Prerequisite: ENGL 099 or placement into ENGL& 101
  5. Math 105: Math for Health Sciences, 5 credits
    1. Prerequisite: Math 078/079, 3-5 credits or
    2. TECH 079 Pre-College Math, 3 credits
  6. Placement into ENGL& 101

You can be working on your prerequisites at the time of application.

Taking Classes before Admission to a Fall Cohort

In addition to the prerequisites shown above, each of the following classes can be taken before admission to a cohort:

  1. AH 100: Bloodborne Pathogens, 1 credit, fully online. This meets the OSHA requirement
 for seven hours HIV/AIDS education for healthcare workers, for those who have not already completed this training. A certificate of completion for such training is a prerequisite for MEDA 145 and MEDA 165.
  2. MEDA 101: Medical Vocabulary I (in a classroom setting), 3 Credits, no prerequisites
 (Take MEDA 101 {strongly recommended} or BTEC 181
    BTEC 181: Medical Terminology I (self-paced in lab or online), 1-3 credits at a time,
 no prerequisites (Take MEDA 101 or BTEC 181)
  3.  MEDA 102: Medical Vocabulary II, (in a classroom setting), 3 Credits 
 (Take MEDA 102 or BTEC 182)
    1. Prerequisite: MEDA 101 or BTEC 181
      BTEC 182: Medical Terminology II, (self-paced in lab or online), 1-3 credits at a time 
 (Take MEDA 102 or BTEC 182) 
      1. Prerequisite: BTEC 181 or MEDA 101
  4. MEDA 122: Law & Ethics for the Medical Office, 3 credits
    1. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or BUS 119
  5. BTEC 171/172/173 (This sequence must be started with 171 in the fall.)
    1. BTEC 171: Medical Reception Procedures, 3 credits
      1. Prerequisite: ENGL 099 or higher
    2. BTEC 172: Medical Office Procedures, 3 credits
      1. Prerequisite: BTEC 171
      2. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or TECH 105
      3. Prerequisite: MATH 079 or TECH 079
    3. BTEC 173: Computers in the Medical Office, 3 credits
      1. Prerequisite: BTEC 172
  6. CS 110: Microcomputer Applications, 3 credits. IF you cannot type without looking at the keyboard, take BTEC 100 as a prerequisite for CS 110. (BTEC 101 or BTEC 145 xan substitute for CS 110.) This is a prerequisite up to Fall 2017 cohort; after that it is still a program requirement, but not a prerequisite.
  7. ENGL& 101: English Composition, 5 credits
    1. Testing placement into ENGL& 101 or
    2. ENGL 98/99 with a C or higher
  8. PSYC& 100: General Psychology, 5 credits, no prerequisites

If you plan to complete an AAS degree, there are additional requirements that may be completed before cohort admission:

  • Diversity course (5 credits)
  • Natural Sciences or Humanities course (5 credits)
  • ENGL& 102 (5 credits) ENGL& 101 is a prerequisite for ENGL& 102; BUS 119 does not count as a prerequisite.
  • Electives (5 credits)
