State Violence, Resistance & Implications for American Politics
In this talk, Professor Becca Thorpe will discuss episodes of state violence in post-World War II America, and the everyday ways that people respond to harmful and oppressive conditions.  On one hand, people work to combat unjust systems and build alternatives to an intolerable status quo. On the other hand, however, repression also erodes trust, heightens fear and insecurity, and creates conditions that precipitate street violence—which further compounds harm and trauma in marginalized communities.

Becca Thorpe is a political science professor at the University of Washington. She studies US institutions and political development, with a focus on the emergence and growth of the world’s most powerful military complex and expansive prison apparatus. Thorpe’s current project examines the history of exclusionary housing, demolition projects and repressive policing, and connects episodes of state violence to political contestation, armed resistance and street violence.
