The Lower Columbia College Forensics Team placed second in the community college division at the Pacific University Scheller Invitational held Jan. 24-26 in Forest Grove, Oregon.

The LCC Fighting Smelt ranked seventh out of all 28 two-year and four-year colleges and universities from Washington, Oregon and Idaho competing at the tournament. The College of Western Idaho took first in the community college division.

The Fighting Smelt were bolstered by outstanding performances in individual speaking events and debate placing third in the community college division in individual speaking events. Holly Lemmons, a sophomore from Longview, led the team in points with a third place in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth in novice persuasive speaking. Marty Kay, a freshman from Kelso, placed second in open division After Dinner Speaking.

Ben Soleim, a freshman from Longview, finished fifth in open editorial commentary and seventh in junior impromptu speaking. Ben Vasion, a freshman from Cathlamet, placed fourth in open editorial commentary. Longview sophomore Sarah Paschen placed fourth in novice persuasive speaking and Erin Mastoras, a sophomore from Medford, Oregon, placed sixth in novice persuasive.

Lemmons finished as a semi-finalist in novice public debate, with a three win/two loss preliminary record. She defeated opponents from Mt. Hood Community College in the round of 16, and from University of Portland in the quarterfinals before losing to a competitor from Boise State in the semi-finals. Soleim finished as junior public debate octo-finalist losing to Boise State with a three win/two loss preliminary round record. Rosse Rodriguez, a sophomore of Longview finished as an octo-finalist in novice public debate losing to a competitor from Oregon State after finishing the preliminary rounds with a three win/two loss record.
