LCC Class of 2018: Accounting Technician

Daron hopes to earn a second associate degree in business management at LCC before transferring to a four-year accounting program. His career goal is to become a fraud investigator or internal auditor.

Daron Wallace hopes to use the skills he acquired at LCC to root out fraud and other illegal activity.

He didn't always know he wanted to fight white collar crime. Although he previously attended Portland Community College, Daron didn't discover his calling there. He drove commercial trucks for over a decade, but found the road conditions for big-rigs to be increasingly dangerous. After a particularly close call, he changed careers and went to work in a steel mill.

Things went well at the mill until a serious back injury landed him at Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation. From there, he made his way to LCC's doorstep to re-train. Daron enrolled in an extra five credits during the first quarter to refresh his skills through the I-BEST program and Math Achievement Center.

The extra effort paid off. Daron is graduating with his Associate in Applied Science-Accounting Technician degree just two years after starting at LCC. He is one of four 2018 Scholastic Achievement Award winners, LCC students selected due to highest academic achievement in their graduating class.

Daron credits the support he received from faculty and staff at LCC with helping him succeed.

“I really like all the help you have once you get into school, especially the tutors, the advisors, and the staff in the Career Center. The support services LCC offers with the degree really make a difference for students,” — Daron said.
