Four LCC Students Named to 2022 All Washington Academic Team
Lower Columbia College students Vanessa Davis, Christina Jurado, Yuuki Matsunari, and Corenna Messinger have been named to the 2022 All Washington Academic Team.
The program is a showcase for Washington's community and technical colleges because it honors the academic high achievers; students who have demonstrated a commitment to success in the classroom and in the communities where they live. This recognition demonstrates the state's commitment to scholarship and community service on the part of those attending the state's public community and technical colleges.
State team members are nominated by their community college presidents. Each All-Washington Academic Team member typically receives a scholarship funded by program sponsors (funding in any given year is determined by program sponsors). The state's public baccalaureate institutions and several private colleges also offer scholarships to award-winning transfer students.
Vanessa Davis
Vanessa Davis, who is in her 50s, is a former addict who has been clean and sober for 23 years. She received a high school diploma from LCC in spring 2020, and is now pursuing a degree in Chemical Dependency Studies. Vanessa, who is Cherokee, is passionate about helping fellow Natives who are struggling with addiction issues. She would like to work for the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, and eventually return to LCC to earn an applied bachelor’s degree.
Christina Jurado
Becoming a mother sparked Christina Jurado’s passion to promote the mission of healthcare as a basic need, support personal and community health, relieve pain and suffering, and treat each person in a caring way. Christina began her career in healthcare as a CNA 14 years ago, and is now a medical assistant in oncology and nursing student. She will continue on to Washington State University for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
Yuuki Matsunari
Yuuki Matsunari is an international student from Wako, Japan, Longview’s sister city. Yuuki is studying computer science at Lower Columbia College, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). He plans to transfer to a four year university in Washington to complete a degree in software engineering. His career goal is to use his AI skills to create tools that help people. Yuuki would like to encourage other students from sister city Wako to study in the U.S.
Corenna Messinger
Corenna Messinger found her passion in obstetrics while completing her Medical Assisting practicum. Now headed toward her career goal of becoming a Registered Nurse, she hopes to draw on her background as a massage therapist to provide a safe and nurturing environment for expectant mothers. When she’s not working, Corenna spends as much time with her children as she can. After finishing her prerequisites at LCC, Corenna hopes to attend the nursing program at Peninsula College.
