Local Area High School Students Compete to attend State-Wide Welding Competition

The Skills USA SW Washington Regional Welding Competition was held on Saturday at Lower Columbia College. Student welders representing three regional high schools; Centralia, Evergreen, and Mountain View High School competed for an opportunity to qualify to compete in the state wide competition slated for April 11 – 13 at Renton Technical College.

Centralia High School swept the competition by placing in first, second, third and fourth place. Each of the competitors had to take two welding knowledge tests as well as demonstrate proficiency in a variety of welding skills from basic to advanced including stick and wire, TIG welding and oxy fuel cutting.

Pro-Tech of Vancouver sponsored this year’s competition and provided the metal and materials for the student welders. Students were awarded prizes donated by local sponsors including welding helmets and hand held grinders.

LCC has partnered with Skills USA to host this event for the past three years as a way to give students an opportunity to test their welding skills and gain exposure to future career and educational pathways at Lower Columbia College. LCC offers students who are enrolled in welding courses at local area high schools the opportunity to earn Tech Prep credits to help jump start their educational goals post high school.
