Head Baseball Coach Donegal Fergus accepts Position with University of Washington

Lower Columbia College Head Baseball Coach Donegal Fergus has accepted a position with the University of Washington baseball program after one season at the helm of the Red Devil program.

In his lone season as head coach for LCC, Fergus compiled an impressive 34-14 win/loss record and led the Devils to the West Region playoffs.

“We are happy that Coach Fergus has received such a nice offer to coach at the Division 1 level,” according to LCC athletic director Kirc Roland. “Although Donegal was only here one season as head coach, he did a fantastic job and we are going to miss him.”

Fergus will serve as an assistant for Husky head coach Lindsay Meggs and will be in charge of recruiting and hitting.  “Coach Fergus did a great job bringing in a top flight recruiting class, and Coach Meggs obviously was impressed,” said Roland.  “The UW is getting a good one.”

Fergus offered this statement: “After much deliberation with my family, I have agreed to become the hitting coach at the University of Washington. It is with a heavy heart that I leave LCC, as this place has been so very good to me through the years. I grew up here and it will always hold a special place in my heart. The people that work on this campus are incredible people and I will miss being here on a daily basis. I especially want to thank my bosses, Kirc Roland, Chad Meadors, Vice President Lisa Matye Edwards and President Chris Bailey for their unbelievable support and mentorship during my time here. Without question the best leadership I have ever worked for.”

Prior to joining LCC, Fergus served two seasons as an assistant coach with the Division I Seattle University baseball team and five seasons as head coach for Tacoma Community College. He also had a stint as an LCC assistant before taking the Tacoma job.

Fergus says it was not an easy decision to leave. “LCC is a special place and I will always be a Red Devil. At this time, the professional opportunity to coach in the prestigious Pac 12 conference and at an institution like UW was simply too much for me to pass up for me and my family,” he said. “I believe strongly that the returning players and coaches, along with the tremendous recruiting class coming in, will continue the tradition of success that LCC Baseball has enjoyed over the years.”

Lower Columbia College will explore all options regarding going ahead with the hiring of a future coach.  “We’ll get together with President Bailey and Vice President Lisa Matye Edwards and discuss all options.  Our current staff is solid, the returners are ready to lead and the incoming freshmen are impressive,” said Roland.  “The expectations and tradition of LCC baseball will continue. We wish Coach Fergus the best in the Pac-12 and we take pride that a member of our family is getting such a great opportunity.”
