LCC’s Chance Stewart is the first recipient of a bachelor’s degree through the Lower Columbia Regional University Center.

In December 2014, Chance received his BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Eastern Washington University (EWU), with a major in liberal arts and minor in philosophy, communications and sociology. He graduated from LCC in 2012 with an associate degree (AA-DTA) and took a year off before starting the EWU program.

Due to family ties—Chance and his wife Maggie, also an LCC employee, welcomed their first child in November—going away to school was not a viable option.

"I don’t know if I would have finished my bachelor's at all without the University Center," he says. Chance explains that he was drawn to Eastern because of its similarities to LCC.

Chance's passion for education comes in handy in his work as Program Coordinator for LCC’s Career Pathways program. In this role, he regularly visits local schools to encourage them to offer qualified classes that result in dual high school and college credit for students. Formerly known as Tech Prep, Career Pathways  helps students get an early and accelerated start on earning a college degree or certificate.

That same passion is spurring Chance on to the next step in his own educational pathway.

"My goal is to complete a master's degree, possibly in organizational leadership," he said. Chance begins his graduate studies at Gonzaga University this term.
