LCC Speech & Debate Opens Conference Competition with Strong Result

October 15, 2018

The Lower Columbia College Fighting Smelt Speech & Debate Team won second place in 2-year sweepstakes at the Steve Hunt Classic Tournament hosted by Lewis & Clark College. This was the first Northwest Forensics Conference (NFC) Designated Tournament of the season. The second place finish shows that LCC stacks up favorably against other community college programs in the conference, which represents schools in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Alaska.

This result was a true team effort, with three different members of the Fighting Smelt earning sweepstakes points across multiple competition events.

Ayesha Ahmed of Cathlamet advanced to the final round of novice IPDA (a format of public debate). She lost in the championship round while negating the resolution “the European Union is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.” Ahmed finished the tournament with an impressive 8-2 record across all rounds of competition.

Olivia Shulke of Castle Rock advanced to the quarterfinal round of novice IPDA and was eliminated while affirming the resolution “the United States Federal Government should create a Space Force.” Shulke also placed 5th in novice Persuasive Speaking and 6th in novice Impromptu Speaking.

Mitchell Levy of Kelso was named 4th place speaker in novice IPDA preliminary rounds. He was eliminated in the octofinal round while affirming the resolution “Miss America made the right decision in eliminating the swimsuit competition.”

First time competitor Camren Thornton also earned his first career win in collegiate debate.

Next up for LCC Speech and Debate is the Boxer Rebellion hosted by Pacific University the weekend of October 27-28.
