Class of 2015: Nursing

“I believe I am capable of achieving anything!”

Angela Gates overcame significant challenges in her life, first as a child and later as a single mother to four daughters. She credits the environment at LCC for her success.

“The Advising and Nursing staff helped with my self-esteem and confidence. I believe that I am capable of achieving anything, but I wasn't 100% sure about this when I started my journey,” she said.

In the Spring of 2015 Angela completed an associate's degree in Nursing from LCC. She plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn her bachelor's degree in nursing. As a student she served as president of the Global Medical Brigades, and participated in medical missions to both Honduras and Nicaragua.

She was also one of the state's top five winners of the prestigious Transforming Lives Award given by the Washington Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges. This award is given to current or former students whose lives have been changed by attending a community or technical college. Of the 34 nominees each year, five are selected to speak at the awards ceremony and receive a cash award. Angela was one of the five.

“My success has everything to do with coming to Lower Columbia College and being accepted for who I am. I know I am in charge of my future.”
