Lower Columbia College has been solid in the history of NWAACC volleyball, but only one Red Devil team has claimed a championship. The 1991 Devils can nowclaim their place in the NWAACC Hall of Fame!
In May of 2014, the 1991 volleyball team from Lower Columbia College was inducted into the Northwest Athletic Association for Community Colleges (NWAACC) Hall of Fame. The team was not remembered for their towering height or imposing strength but for their fire, passion, and relentless desire to play for one another.
Those characteristics, along with strong leadership and mentoring from their coaches, led them to an amazing comeback victory at the 1991 NWAACC Championship.
In the championship, LCC went undefeated beating Shoreline 3-0, Spokane 3-1, Chemeketa 3-0, Mt. Hood 3-0, and then in the final, they outlasted Mt. Hood again, 3-1.
A team with quickness, intelligence and athletic skill, the 1991 Red Devils went 53-4 on the season and captured the college's first-ever NWAACC Volleyball Championship, defeating Mt. Hood on the Saints home court, after losing the first set.
Setter Marcy Watkins was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Peggy Adams and Jennifer Godinho. Amy Ness was named to the second team. Head coach Jocelyn Price was named co-head coach of the year. She had previously been honored as the NWAACC Western Region Coach of the Year several times.
During the Devils’ magical run that year, the team went 11-1 to win the Western Region title, won the LCC Cross Over, the Shoreline Cross Over, and also took the LCC Pre-Season tournament.
Adams went on to stardom at Portland State where she earned a national championship with the Vikings, while Watkins and Godinho became starters for Central Washington University. Three members went on into coaching roles; Godinho is the varsity coach at RA Long High School in Longview, Washington; Dailey is the varsity coach at Napavine High School in Napavine, Washington. Marcy Watkins (now Gilchrist), went on to coach the Red Devils’ team for five seasons where she earned Western Region Coach of the Year in 2009, and is currently the varsity coach for Mark Morris High School in Longview, Washington.
