Charlotte Curry was the champion in the junior division of IPDA debate. She continued
her impressive start to the year, having now amassed a 12-2 record across the last
two tournaments. Curry also finished fifth in editorial commentary and seventh in
junior extemporaneous speaking.
Keida Patterson was the champion in the novice division of persuasive speaking and
top novice in program oral interpretation. Patterson also finished second in novice
impromptu, advanced to quarterfinals in novice IPDA, and was named third novice speaker
in IPDA debate.
Seamus Mahoney advanced to the semifinal round of novice IPDA. Seamus was the only
member of the LCC squad to advance to elimination rounds in debate at all three conference
designated tournaments of the season.
Anastasia Kulikova and Atilla Elik, both international students at LCC, advanced to
the final round of novice persuasive speaking. They finished fourth and fifth place.
Adah Moore advanced to the final round of editorial commentary and finished sixth
place.
Also competing on behalf of the Fighting Smelt were Lukas Krutz, Jupiter Hall, and
Kseniia Iurchenko.
The Fighting Smelt received coaching support from program alumni Molly Mahoney, Alanya
Tovar, Mitchell Levy, Erika Hein, and Glenn John Cervantes.
LCC Speech and Debate will next host the 51st annual Michael Dugaw Smelt Classic tournament on our campus in Longview on February
10-11.
