LCC Class of 2026: Scholastic Achievement Award winner

Simon Hwang – Associate of Applied Science, Welding

Simon Hwang’s journey to Lower Columbia College’s welding program was far from traditional. After graduating from a STEM-focused high school in New Jersey with Advanced Placement credits in five disciplines, Simon earned a bachelor’s degree and spent four years navigating the white-collar corporate world. However, he soon realized that cubicle life wasn't his calling and decided to trade his desk for a welding torch. Drawn to LCC’s renowned program, Simon found the perfect outlet to fulfill his desire to work with metal.

His career pivot has yielded exceptional results. Simon completed his AAS in Welding this past winter quarter, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout his time at LCC. In recognition of his hard work, he is the proud recipient of LCC’s 2026 Scholastic Achievement Award for professional/technical programs. Looking ahead, Simon plans to leverage his degree to build a successful career in welding and fabrication.

When he isn't in the shop, Simon enjoys an active outdoor life with his wife, their two rescue dogs, and seven chickens—frequently spending his free time camping, backpacking, kayaking, and gardening.
