Class of 2017: Medical Assisting

“LCC plays a critical role in the local economy. I don’t want to stop learning and doing new things just because I retired.”

To say that Steven Hogg is a non-traditional student would be an understatement.

It might be more accurate to say that he’s got a unique perspective on the meaning of “retirement.” For 27 years, Steven served in the United States Marine Corps. He retired as a Colonel (Senior) after many years of leading boot camp operations on Parris Island, South Carolina.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Steven and his wife relocated to Longview to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter. He started a second career in the field of juvenile detention about six and a half years ago.

Then he met Liz Engel, head of LCC’s Medical Assisting program. Liz convinced Steven to give healthcare—and LCC—a try. So he took the plunge, and will graduate from the program this spring.

Being a lifelong learner is important to Steven, and he is appreciative of the value LCC brings to the community.

“LCC plays a critical role in the local economy,” he said. “I don’t want to stop learning and doing new things just because I retired (from a previous career).”

In recognition of his academic achievement at LCC, Steven is the recipient of a 2017 Scholastic Achievement Award. He was also named 2017 Outstanding Medical Assisting Student of the Year. He is the only male in this year's graduating class of Medical Assistants.
