Unemployment & Retraining

Are you unemployed, receiving Unemployment Insurance (UI), and either attending or planning to attend college? Then you should know the following:

The Unemployment Insurance program requires that you are able to and available for work. If you are receiving UI and attending or planning to attend school, apply for Commissioner Approved Training (CAT) early, or you may risk losing your Unemployment Insurance. If you are approved for CAT you will be exempt from the UI job search requirements. To apply for CAT see: Commissioner Approved Training.

You may also be available for these benefits that will help you to stay in school and/or pay for your education.

  • Training Benefits (TB) extend your UI while you are in an approved training program. For more see: Training Benefits Program. Deadlines apply!
  • Workforce Investment Act (WIA) can assist you with re-employment and retraining services. To see if you are eligible, go to a weekly WorkSource Orientation, held every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the WorkSource office, 305 South Pacific, Kelso, WA.
  • Worker Retraining Financial Aid or Training Completion Aid is administered by Lower Columbia College and is designed to get you started or help you complete your studies in a Professional-Technical program. Worker Retraining may be available to supplement your other financial aid resources.

For more information, please attend the next Worker Retraining Information session or contact:
