Preparing for College

You're probably thinking about what you can do to help your student prepare to transition to college. We're here to help!

If they're still in high school, they can prepare for college by taking rigorous courses, including taking 4 years of math. If they're interested in science-based college programs they should also take as many science classes as possible during their high school years. Of course, English is the backbone of almost all college work, so being a good reader and writer is really important.

Many students are undecided about their career interests or which college program is the best fit for them. If they think they would like to earn a 4-year bachelor's degree, they may start with the 2-year DTA transfer degree, which allows them to explore many different fields.

If your student will be starting college soon, here's some more good advice:

  • Ask questions! LCC Student Services advisors can help students with most concerns, but only if we know about them.
  • Be prepared too do a lot more work in a shorter period of time. College courses cover a lot of ground quickly.
  • If you have a career or college program focus, go do some "homework" in the LCC Career Center. Knowing your goal creates great motivation.
  • College students say time management and study skills are crucial. If your student needs help in these areas, the LCC Learning Center can help with some great advice, workshops and classes.
