Lower Columbia College welcomes and supports students who need (or have) a student visa to study in the United States. Those who need (or have) a student visa are required to follow the LCC international admissions process. We interviewed the International Admissions Specialist, Laynara de Fatima Ferreira, for information about this process.
For insights from current international students, read the International Admissions: Q&A with Students (hyperlink to the blog post).

Lay: One of the most common mistakes I see is starting the process too close to your intended start date. It’s completely understandable – there’s a lot to think about when planning to study abroad! But because the international admissions process involves many steps, such as submitting documents, receiving your I-20, and preparing for a visa appointment. It’s best to begin early. Starting ahead of time gives you space to carefully complete each step without feeling rushed. Staying organized, keeping track of deadlines, and reviewing each part of your application as you go can make the process much easier and less stressful.

Lay: A helpful way to move through the process faster is to gather your documents and information ahead of time, so you feel ready when it’s time to submit. Taking a little extra time to double-check everything can give you confidence and make the steps that follow easier. Also, monitor your email. Your quick reply to our questions helps us support you quickly. Most importantly, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to guide you and make the process as clear and manageable as possible.
Lay: I typically respond within one to two business days. During busier application periods, it may take a little longer, but I always do my best to reply as quickly as possible. Sending clear, specific questions helps me provide the most helpful response.

Lay: Applicants should prepare for two waiting periods. The first is after they submit their LCC international admissions application. Our office needs a few days to carefully review the materials to ensure everything meets U.S. government regulations, and then issue an admission letter and I-20. The second waiting period is the visa appointment. The visa appointment availability at U.S. embassies or consulates can also affect overall timelines, which is another reason why starting early is so important. Check your local office for the current wait.
Lay: Start early, stay organized, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The international admissions process can feel overwhelming at first, but my role is to guide students through each step. If something is unclear, reaching out sooner rather than later can prevent unnecessary stress. We truly look forward to welcoming international students to Lower Columbia College and supporting them throughout their journey!
