Choosing a major can feel confusing and overwhelming, especially if you are not sure what you want to study yet. In the U.S., many students start at a community college to explore different subjects before deciding on a major. In this blog, I introduce what majors are popular, what kinds of classes students take, and how students choose their major.
A major is the main subject you focus on in college. It is the field you study the most and usually relates to your future career.

LCC offers over 90 degrees and certificate options! But let me introduce the top 5 most popular majors. According to Student Choice, the top 5 most popular majors in 2024 are:

Students choose their major based on many factors, such as:
- Personal interests
- Career goals
- Salary & future opportunities
- Family influence
- Strengths in school subjects
I chose a major in teacher education because of my career goal. Some other international students chose their major based on their interests, family influence, or salary. If you have no idea of the major you are interested in, that’s fine! There is an option to choose General AA-DTA. Going to a community college allows students to explore many different subjects, so it is a really good opportunity for those who have not decided on a major yet.
Some of you might think, “Okay, so I can choose a variety of classes/majors at community college. But what if I change my mind? Is it okay to change my majors?”
Yes!! It is very common at community colleges. Community college helps students save money while exploring different majors. Some students change their major from a general transfer program to a more specific major, or vice versa.
Everyone’s college journey is different, and it’s okay if you haven’t decided on a major yet. Community college allows you to try new classes and explore your interests. I hope this blog makes you feel more comfortable about exploring your future! Thank you for reading.
