Each new academic quarter at Lower Columbia College begins with Welcome Week.  A tradition designed to help students ease into campus life, connect with their peers, and get a feel for what the college community has to offer. Organized by ASLCC, the Associated Students of Lower Columbia College, these first weeks of the term are packed with events aimed at bringing students together in fun, informal ways. All activities are completely free for students, and participation is highly encouraged.

The range of events offered during Welcome Week is intentionally broad, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Some days feature creative, hands-on activities like mug painting, bracelet making, or do-it-yourself flower arrangements. On other days, students might find free food giveaways on campus, everything from boba tea to snow cones, offering a quick treat between classes. ASLCC also throws in lighthearted social events like trivia competitions to keep the atmosphere relaxed and engaging.

In my first Welcome Week, I went to the “Do-It-Yourself Flower Arrangement” and loved it. I got to go home with a new plant pot and learned how to take care of it so it does not die on me. I also met someone in my class I did not know, and they helped me choose a plant. It was something simple, set up for students that allowed me to get a better understanding of the community around me and all the fun events that can take place.

In addition to the casual activities, Welcome Week includes one or two large-scale campus-wide events. These are often club fairs or open house-style gatherings where students can meet club leaders, learn about involvement opportunities, and explore resources available on campus. ASLCC occasionally invites entertainers to perform during these weeks as well, with past events featuring comedians, magicians, and other live acts to create memorable experiences for students.

Welcome Week isn’t just about having fun – it’s about helping students feel like they belong. Whether it’s a free snow cone, a casual trivia match, or a conversation at a club table, these small moments build connections and make it easier for students to feel part of the LCC community. ASLCC’s goal with Welcome Week is to start every quarter with positive energy, ensuring no student feels like a stranger on campus. In my first term as a new LCC student, I found these activities very useful to get familiarized with the campus, meet new people, form connections, and make contact with those around me. It was relaxing to know there is a community of great people right in front of me.
