When people think about studying in the U.S., big cities like Seattle or Portland usually get all the attention. But honestly, there’s something special about smaller towns like Longview. I’ve been living here as an international student, and while it’s not a huge city with skyscrapers and packed streets, it’s one of those places that quietly grows on you.

One of the best spots in town is Lake Sacajawea Park. It’s kind of the center of everything here. There’s a path that goes all the way around the lake, about 3.5 miles, and it’s perfect for going on a run or clearing your head after a long day of classes. I like going there for evening walks, especially when the sun’s setting and the sky turns pink over the water. In the spring and summer, the flowers around the lake are beautiful, and you’ll see ducks, people fishing, and families having picnics. It’s honestly one of the best places to relax when you’re feeling a little homesick or just need some fresh air.

Triangle Shopping mall in Longview washinton entrance sign with stores such as Winco, Ross. Marshalls, Petco and Big 5.

There is also plenty to eat at the Triangle Shopping Center, whether you are looking for a sit-down restaurant, a fast food place, a quick snack, or even grab your ingredients at a grocery store called WinCo to cook at your own place, all of this is a short 10-minute walk away from campus and a great place to hang out with friends and catch up about each other’s days.

Not too far from the lake, there are a few pickleball courts that are open to the public. Pickleball is a hybrid of pingpong and tennis. It started here in Washington state and is very popular. You need to bring your paddles and ball, but once you have them, it is a very fun local game to play. It is a chance to exercise outside with friends or even get involved with the community, get to know more people and more about pickleball, as well as meet new friends. It is easily accessible by car and is not a long walk.

There are many places within a short driving distance to go for a good time - great if you have a car or a friend with a car. For example, there are several rivers that flow through town. If the weather is nice and sunny, there are little beach areas on various riversides where you can lay in the sun, get a tan, play some beach volleyball, enjoy a cold dip to get in the water! I will warn you, the water here is very cold!

Longview might not be a city you see on popular social media travel vlogs, but that’s kind of what makes it great. It’s calm, friendly, and full of little spots you learn to love the longer you stay. For any international student thinking about coming here, or already here and wondering what to do, just start with a walk around the lake. Everything else kind of falls into place after that.
