Lower Columbia College is a community college. Community colleges are home to a diverse student population, welcoming students who are studying at the college level for the first time, returning after years in the workforce, and/or taking classes for fun.
When international students begin studying at LCC, they are surprised to have classmates who are “traditional” college students, high school students, working parents, and even retired persons. We want to introduce you, prospective international student, to some of your classmates who are local to Longview, WA.

Tell us about yourself!
Ran anim everyone, my name is Connie. I'm a proud mother of three beautiful children, one son and twin daughters. I’m from the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). I moved to Longview in 2021, and began working as a translator for the Longview School District. I started attending Lower Columbia College in the spring of 2023. Going back to school after a long break has been challenging, but I chose to do it for my children. Hopefully, they see the value of pursuing higher education. I'm passionate about helping others, especially by bridging communication gaps through my native language.
Why did you decide to study at LCC?
Attending LCC has truly been a wonderful experience. Ever since I was young, I dreamed of pursuing my education but for many years, there were so many obstacles in my way. When I first visited LCC, I honestly didn’t think I would be accepted. But the staff who supported me back in 2023 were phenomenal. They guided me through every step of the process from the very beginning, and made me feel welcome and like I truly belonged.
Since then, I’ve given my best to reach my goal of earning a degree, and I can’t believe
I’m now just one quarter away, yay! I’m forever grateful to LCC, especially the amazing
staff and faculty who have helped me throughout this journey. I couldn’t have come
this far without all of you.
Editor’s note: This interview was conducted in Spring 2025. Connie has now graduated - Congrats,
Connie! We are so proud of you!
What advice do you have for future LCC students?
LCC is a home to all! Here, everyone is reaching out and helping one another. You are seen, and cared for, and valued. You belong regardless of your color, language, and background. So be yourself, and enjoy your surroundings and pursue your learning with confidence and joy.
What do you do when not on campus?
As a mother and a student, I have a full plate. However, I always make time in the evening to walk up and down the sidewalk, enjoying the breeze and the peaceful scenery in the neighborhood.

Tell us about yourself!
Hi, my name is Tashauna Kilmer. I am a single parent to an amazing seven year old little girl. I am attending LCC to hopefully land a career that I can grow and thrive in. I have a national certification and a medical assistant license in the state of Washington. Working in and with healthcare has always been a goal for me. I have always had a passion for caring for others and being a part of a team. I am a member of our campus Rotaract club which enables me to do community outreach projects that are near and dear to my heart. I have about a year left to go until I graduate college. I am excited to see where the journey takes me.
Why did you decide to study at LCC?
I was diagnosed with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease. I needed to pivot to a career that was essentially a “desk job” so that I could do my job even if I happen to be having a flare-up.
What advice do you have for future LCC students?
Take it one day at a time, and use the resources available to you. For example, the Business Achievement Center (BAC) and the Tutoring Center. There is a great welcoming community here on campus that I am super grateful for.
What do you do when not on campus?
When I am not on campus, I am working on my homework at home, or hanging out with my daughter and doing art and crafts.
