Class Modality

LCC offers a variety of in-person and online class options each quarter. When choosing classes, knowing how you will be expected to engage in the class is important  prior to registering. Here are some helpful tips to be sure you know for which type of class you are enrolling.

Pro tip: use the "Subject Begins With" field to search (EX: enter ART in this field to see a full list of both ART and ART& classes).

To view the list of classes being offered on-campus or in a hybrid format each quarter - follow these steps:

  • Select the Quarterly Class Schedule link below​;
  • Select Lower Columbia College;
  • Select the term (Summer 2022);
  • Enter the subject you are looking for in the "Subject begins with" filed (Ex: ENGL, MATH, ACCT, etc.);
  • Select the Instruction Mode that you are seeking (in-person, hybrid, etc.);
  • Select Search;
    • This will display all classes that are held in the modality you selected

100% Face-to-Face Instruction:

 

In-Person

In-person instruction is delivered in a designated classroom, and may use the online learning management system (CANVAS). Instructors identify the dates and times the students must attend in-person classroom instruction with scheduled meeting days and times as published in the class schedule. Courses may require proctored testing which may be available online.

    • Meeting pattern: Days & times listed;
    • Location: Building and room listed;
    • Instruction Mode: In-Person (P).
    • Section Codes: 
      • Lectures: A, B, C, etc.;
      • Labs: AL, BL, CL, etc;.
      • Multiple Labs: AL1, AL2, BL1, BL2, CL1, CL2, etc.

100% Online Instruction:

 

Online Synchronous / Virtual Classroom (Real-Time)

This class is conducted online in real-time in a virtual classroom with scheduled meeting days and times as published in the class schedule. Specific expectations regarding real-time sessions will be communicated by the faculty. Students are required to have reliable and daily access to a computer and internet service. Courses may require proctored testing which may be available online.

    • Meeting pattern: Days & times listed;
    • Location: Virtual Classroom;
    • Instruction Mode: Online (OL).
    • Section Codes: 
      • Lecture: VC1, VC2, VC3, etc.;
      • Labs: VCL1, VCL2, VCL3, etc.

 

Online Asynchronous (Anytime)

This class has no scheduled meeting time. The course will be conducted online, requiring students to have reliable and daily access to a computer and internet service. Specific expectations regarding coursework and deadlines will be communicated by the faculty. Courses may require proctored testing which may be available online.

    • Meeting pattern: Arranged or TBA;
    • Location: Online;
    • Instruction Mode: Online (OL).
    • Section Codes:
      • Lecture: DE, DE1, DE2, etc.
      • Labs: DEL, DE1L, DE2L, etc.

 

Online Hybrid / Virtual Classroom (mix of Real-Time & Anytime)

This class will have a mix of online asynchronous (anytime) and online synchronous (real-time) which has scheduled meeting days and times as published in the class schedule. Specific expectations regarding real-time sessions and online coursework and deadlines will be communicated by the faculty. Students are required to have reliable and daily access to a computer and internet service. Courses may require proctored testing which may be available online.

    • Meeting pattern: Days & times listed (for real-time portion);
    • Location: Online;
    • Instruction Mode: Online (OL).
    • Section Codes: 
      • Lecture: VC, VC1, VC2, etc.;
      • Labs: VCL, VC1L, VC2L, etc. 

Mixture of Face-to-Face & Online Instruction:

 

Hybrid

This class includes in-person classroom instruction with online coursework that may be delivered asynchronously (anytime) or synchronously (real-time). Coursework does require access to reliable internet service. Instructors identify the dates and times the students must attend in-person classroom instruction with scheduled meeting days and times as published in the class schedule. Courses may require proctored testing which may be available online.

    • Meeting pattern: Days & times listed;
    • Location: Building and room listed;
    • Instruction Mode: Hybrid.
      *If the online component is synchronous (real-time) then a second meeting pattern will be listed and the location will be listed as a virtual classroom.
    • Section Codes: 
      • Lecture: HY, HY1, HY2, etc.;
      • Labs: HYL, HYL1, HYL2, etc. 

Class Section Coding - Beginning spring 2021, the coding outlined below will be used for classes other than in-person & web-enhanced:

  • DE - fully online, asynchronous (anytime);
  • VC - virtual classroom, all online & synchronous (specific day/time);
  • VH - virtual hybrid, mix of fully online (anytime) and virtual classroom (real-time);
  • HY - hybrid, in person instruction  (specific day/time) with & asynchronous online (on your own);
  • N - classes with a start time after 4:00 pm.
