Lower Columbia College has staff dedicated to the international student experience and supporting all students, faculty and staff in international programming. We sat down with the team to learn more about them.

Andie Ingram Eccles, Director of International Programs, PDSO
What do you do at LCC?
As the Director, I get to do many things. I support international students in their journey in the United States, and study abroad students in their experiences outside the United States. I collaborate with faculty and staff to bring global opportunities to our classrooms, and celebrate our global cultures on campus. I work with global partners around the world to increase opportunities for LCC students.
Why international programs?
I grew up with international students in my house, and learned the fun of cross-cultural exchange. While in university, I studied abroad twice – once in China and once in France. I volunteered as a translator and worked at a university with a majority of international students. These experiences confirmed my passion for international education.
What languages do you know?
I have limited proficiency in Chinese-Mandarin, French, and American Sign Language (ASL). My proficiency is decreasing due to lack of practice. I love when students teach me phrases from their home countries.
What do you do when not on campus?
I love books! I am listening to at least three-four audiobooks at a time. You may also find me watching soccer, walking in a garden, or working my vegan cooking.

Keiko Pedersen, Program Specialist, DSO
What do you do at LCC?
As a Program Specialist in the International Programs Office, I support new student onboarding, coordinate short-term programs, student campus employment, assist with Japanese student recruitment and inquiries, and provide day-to-day support for international students. I also serve as an LCC liaison to the Longview Sister City Committee and help with Japanese student recruitment and outreach.
Why international programs?
I started at LCC as an ESL student and also became involved in Sister City exchange programs because I had lived in Longview’s sister city, Wako, Japan. That experience led me to support LCC’s international programs as a translator for the short-term program and exchange visitors from Japan.Since then, I’ve fallen in love with supporting international students! When I first arrived in the U.S., I could barely communicate in English and learned so much about cultural differences. Because of my experience, I understand how challenging that journey can be, and I hope to use what I have learned to support international students with care, understanding, and encouragement. Working in International Programs is also very rewarding because I have the opportunity to learn about students’ cultures and watch them grow and shine on campus!
What languages do you know?
Japanese is my native language, and English is my second language. I’m also currently learning Norwegian and Italian in my free time, and I’m doing my best to keep my Duolingo streak going.
What do you do when not on campus?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, gardening, reading, and occasionally running. I especially love reading books and have recently started enjoying audiobooks as well. If you have any good book recommendations, please let me know!

Laynara Ferreira, Admissions & SEVIS Specialist, DSO.
What do you do?
As the Admissions & SEVIS Specialist, I guide international students through the admissions process and help them stay informed about the U.S. immigration regulations that are essential for maintaining their F-1 visa status while they are here. I enjoy providing the support they need so they can focus on their academic and personal growth at LCC.
Why international programs? Or Why LCC?
As a former international student and ESL teacher, I know firsthand how exciting and transformative studying in a new country can be. LCC provides a welcoming and diverse community where students can grow academically, culturally, and personally. I’m passionate about helping them navigate this journey and ensuring they have the support they need to succeed—just as I did when I was in their shoes.
What languages do you know?
I speak Brazilian Portuguese and English fluently. I am currently learning French, and I love the challenge of picking up new languages to connect with students from all over the world.
What do you do when not on campus?
Outside of work, I like finding new books to read and spending time with my family. I also dedicate some of my free time volunteering as an ESL tutor, which allows me to connect with individuals from different backgrounds and help them improve their English language skills.
