Washington State University Vancouver grants a full scholarship to an accomplished student, nominated by the LCC President, each year.

The 2018 recipient is Clinton Howard, LCC's student body president and vice president of service for the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Howard is no stranger to academic awards. He is LCC’s 2018 Transforming Lives Award winner, and part of this year's All Washington Academic Team. He is also a member of the (national) Coca Cola Academic Team, where he received the 'Bronze Scholar' designation.

In 2017, Howard received the Outstanding Psychology Student Award and served as president of the college's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). PTK is the national honor society for community colleges.

In his role as a student leader for LCC, Howard participated in a wide array of college activities including Tech Fee Committee, Tenure Track Council, Student Code of Conduct Committee, multiple institutional monitoring teams, and ASLCC Budget Committee.

Howard helped to establish a literacy program and partnership with St. Helens Elementary School in Longview. Earlier in the academic year, he traveled to Texas for a rebuilding project related to Hurricane Harvey. During the 2018 legislative season, Howard worked with the College Coalition Network to advocate for funding for low-income college students. Legislators ultimately approved a $300 million increase for State Need grants.

Howard plans to pursue an advanced degree in organizational psychology.
