Associate in Applied Science (AAS)

About the Program

The Substance Use Disorder Studies program offers courses that meet the educational requirements set forth in Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 246-811-030 for licensure as a Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDP). The curriculum includes the following topics specific to alcohol and drug addiction treatment of individuals: pharmacological actions of alcohol and other drugs, treatment methods, record keeping and case management, cultural diversity, health issues, community resources, individual and group counseling, relapse prevention, working with specific groups, such as youth and families, and professional and ethical responsibilities.

Degree Requirements

Total credits required to earn this degree: 90 with a "C" or higher in the program requirements

Program Outcomes

Students completing this program should acquire the following skills and abilities:

  • Demonstrate critical thinking by applying objective, valid methods of inquiry and problem solving to draw rational, ethical, and coherent conclusions in client situations within the field of Substance Use Disorders.
  • Demonstrate competency in Substance Use Disorder principles, topics, knowledge, and clinical skills. 
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, peers, clients, client family systems, health care professionals, community agencies and the judicial system. 
  • Incorporate interpersonal skills and caring behaviors in interactions with faculty, peers, clients, client family systems, health care professionals, community agencies, the judicial system, and employers.

* Students planning to enter the BAS-OLTM program after completion of the AAS - SUDS program must complete MATH& 107 or higher (excluding MATH& 131).

** These SUDS program requirements must be completed, in addition to the math, English, and natural science degree requirements, to be eligible for your practicum (field work) credits (SUDS 288).
