Summary: Clickable phone numbers activate the automatic dialing of a phone number, so the user does not have to manually enter a number into their phone dialer. It is a simple and convenient way to improve website usability and organizational service, especially in today's on-demand world of mobile phone use.
Create a Link to a Phone Number
The process is similar to creating a regular link.
- Key in link text and select it: Example: Call (360) 442-2311.
- Click the 'Insert/Edit Link' button on your toolbar.
- Enter the following into the URL field: tel:=+1phonenumber (no spaces, no hyphens). Example: tel:+13604422311.
- Enter a title into the *Title field. It should be the department the number routes to. Example: Entry Center.
- Click OK.
- Save and submit (or publish).
Once published, check the phone number on a smartphone or other mobile device to confirm it dials correctly. Example: Call (360) 442-2311.
*About Titles
Adding a Title enables search engines to return the phone number when; for example, a user searches for a term such as 'Lower Columbia College Entry Center'.
If your link dials a phone number that is at LCC, the title field should contain only the department name. Example: Entry Center. Not LCC Entry Center, or Lower Columbia College Entry Center.
If your link dials a phone number that is not at LCC, please put the full name of the organization/department into the title. Example, a clickable phone number for Bank of America that is on the LCC website, should include the title: Longview branch of Bank of America.
