Women’s Soccer 1997

Wali had an incredible season in 1997, leading the Red Devils to a third place finish in the NWAC tournament that year.  She scored a then-NWAC record 24 goals as the Devils finished with a record of 11-3-2.  The 1997 Devils scored a team record 56 goals that season and Martin was right in the middle of many of them.  The team was coached by Dan Nickerson and assisted by Max Anderson.  When Nickerson stepped down the following season, Martin was named the head coach at LCC. After one year as head coach, Martin continued her career path which led to medical school. She became a family doctor and currently practices medicine in Prosser, WA

Baseball 1989 - 1990 | Baseball Coach 1995-98 

Scott has the distinction of winning an NWAC championship at LCC as a player and a coach.  He pitched for the 1989 team that won the division title with a 21-5 record.  The following season McDaniel was a key arm in helping the Devils to the 1990 NWAC championship. Both teams were coached by Steve Farrington.  McDaniel then went on to Portland State University.  Upon completion of his playing career, McDaniel was hired as the pitching coach under newly hired Kelly Smith.  Together Smith and McDaniel led the Devils to three straight NWAC championships from 1995 to 1997.  McDaniel currently resides in Kelso and works for Pacific Tech Construction. He led the recent project to improve the LCC bullpen.

Basketball and Softball 1996 - 1997, 1997 - 1998

The Castle Rock star came to LCC and was a starter on the 1996-97 LCC basketball team coached by Lisa Kihl.  That Devils team went 12-2 in division play and qualified for the NWAC tournament.  Kihl’s 97-98 LCC team went unbeaten (14-0) in division play and ended up fifth in the NWAC.  Johnston was named the West Region MVP and Scholar Athlete. In softball, Johnston helped the 1997 Tim Mackin-led Devils to a third place finish in the NWAC.  The 1998 season was another solid one for Johnston as the Devils won 33 games and took 4^th in the NWAC.  Jaime was named to the NWAC Southwest Region first team. Jaime currently is a teacher in the Kelso School District Special Education program and coaches her daughter’s Hilander Hoop Club basketball team. She also is an assistant coach for the Cowlitz County Devils youth fastpitch team.

Basketball 1967 - 1968 ; 1968 - 1969

The high scoring star from Jefferson High in Portland put together two great seasons for LCC head coach Don Porter.  In the span of those two seasons, the Devils scored over 100 points an incredible 18 times.  Tims was a big part of the fast-breaking LCC style.  James scored a school record 41 points in a 105-91 victory over Fort Steilacoom his sophomore season. Tims went on to a long career as Director of Operations and Vice President for several Fortune 500 restaurant and food service companies. He is also a member of the beloved Portland gospel-soul group, the Legendary Beyons, which has been delighting audiences for over 50 years.

Coach/Supporter 

It’s a short list of people who have been around LCC athletics more than Harlan Cruser.  He is one of the longest running members of the LCC Booster Club, over 40 years and counting.  Together with his wife Lorna, Harlan can be seen at many Red Devil athletic events cheering the team and offering constructive help for the officials.  Cruser took over the LCC women’s soccer program in 2011 after the team was suspended for two-years due to budget cuts.  He built the team back from scratch and continued a six year run of steady improvement, culminating with a playoff win and 8^th place finish in 2017, his final season as head coach.  After his “retirement” as head coach, he continued to serve as an assistant under Brian Vogel and current head coach Joe Chicks, and has done much behind the scenes work as a fund-raiser, mentor, coach, groundskeeper and friend.

Under the leadership of head coach Scott Carnahan, the 1981 Red Devils won the school’s second NWAC championship.  In his 5^th season, after two second places and the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, Carnahan broke through to the title with the 1981 team.  Mother nature tried to mess with the 81 Devils as rain thwarted the final day, but it was clear this team was the best in the NWAC.  The team won the division title with a 17-7 record and went 3-0 in the championship tournament.  The Devils were led by LCC Hall of Famer Jim O’Dell, Don Fenton, Allan Peterson, Gary Balmer and Todd Baddley.

The 1981 LCC Baseball team will be honored during the current Red Devils home baseball double header on Saturday April 29 against Pierce College.
