Longview is home to the Nutty Narrows Bridge. The world’s first bridge built specifically for squirrels! It was built in 1963 by local builder Amos Peters. This 60-foot bridge stretches over Olympia Way near the Civic Center Circle and connects the Park Plaza office building to the city park across the street. It allows squirrels to safely cross the road without the risk of traffic, and it’s a unique symbol of how much the community cares even about squirrels.

Now there are nine squirrel bridges built around Lake Sacajawea. Each one is uniquely designed and represents a special contribution from a member of the community. To celebrate this fun and thoughtful tradition, Longview now hosts an annual Squirrel Fest in Summer! It’s a free, family, friendly event held in the Civic Circle that draws visitors of all ages.

What a thoughtful idea and what a legacy! Thanks to Amos Peters and the people of Longview for their passion and hospitality over such beautiful little creatures. These bridges and events have expanded all over the lake and parks near the Civic Center.

And guess what? Lower Columbia College (LCC) is nearby too, which means you will get to see plenty of squirrels running around on campus! They are everywhere, and they are honestly the cutest little creatures. One of the best places to spot them is along the back route near the student garden. You will see them climbing trees, chasing each other, or even just strolling beside you.

If you take a moment to watch them, you will see how fun they were, sometimes it seems like they are helping clean up the campus, like little furry custodians! Whether they were spotted in trash cans or eating up trash around the campus. They seem to enjoy being watched while they do their own business -  playing with trash, digging in the grass, or simply exploring.
