International Education Week is an annual event celebrated at LCC. We interviewed the Director of International Programs, Andie Ingram Eccles, to learn more about the week.

 What is International Education Week?

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative from the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. IEW is observed nation-wide one week in November.

LCC extends IEW to include all students, faculty and staff to share and celebrate their global identities. We host week-long activities and events for our community. All of our events were free for students, faculty, and staff, and – of course – included global snacks.

What events and activities are included?

The events for 2025 included Cultural Tables, Global Games, Anime Coloring, a movie night (Encanto!), and study abroad information sessions. Our campus cafe, Red Devils Cafe, hosted global inspired lunch specials throughout the week. These events are made possible because of campus collaborations with ASLCC, DEI, Board Game Club, International Club, Anime Club, Red Devils Cafe, and International Programs.

We also had activities all-week long that students (faculty and staff too) could participate in. There was an International Flag Scavenger Hunt. We hid 15 country flags around campus, along with some fun facts about the country or flag. There was daily trivia posted in the International Programs Office and Diversity and Equity Center. There were prizes for the top participants of both activities!

 What are Cultural Tables?

Students choose something from their country or culture to showcase at a table. It could be a game, a snack, an instrument, traditional clothing, language, a history lesson, etc. The table will have an interactive element, something participants can touch, practice, or learn. Examples include tables where participants could make traditional Filipino Christmas ornaments, practice Chinese calligraphy, and sample savory snacks from Kenya, all while making personal connections with the LCC community members.

In 2025, we had seven tables representing seven different countries and cultures. This includes: China, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Romania, South Korea, and Vietnam. In 2024, we also had tables representing Brazil, Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Micronesia, and the Philippines.

 How can students get involved?

IEW is open to all LCC students, faculty, and staff. Students are invited to take a leadership role in hosting part of an event (such as hosting a Cultural Table) or be an active participant by joining the activities.

For 2025, one of the most popular activities was an anime coloring session. This event was an idea between two student clubs, International Club and Anime Club. To join us next year, watch your email for an invitation!
